September Climate Futures
The use of science fiction writers to work with policy makers, non-governmental organisations and business for our uncertain future might sound far-fetched; it’s not. It’s already happening here in Scotland only it’s communities that are devising and delivering extraordinary, effective responses at a local level, to both current and future uncertainty. The fact is, that in many instances it starts with a little imagination, accessing and securing land, and some basic infrastructure to grow food and restore nature.
Taking action now, for both climate and nature, with and for your community, doesn’t have to be complicated. Multiple small actions can make an immediate difference; investing in our local ability to respond to rising food insecurity, nature loss and extreme weather events. Growing groups working in varied settings have an opportunity to forge and foster positive relationships, demonstrate and practice adaptive behaviours, solve problems together, and share and practice skills people can then try at home. From reducing food waste to trying new foods and ways of eating, to planting with pollinators, building soil health, repairing and repurposing to saving seeds for future crops, there is something for everyone. As we work with place, nature and each other we become better prepared and more resilient. The stories on www.getgrowingscotland.com demonstrate how in multiple settings this is possible.
